I officially launched the LLC in April of 2021. It’s been almost one year and 3 months. I recently caught up with my friend Ashley, and she asked if I was in the black. Knowing what I didn’t know, I asked what that meant. Did you lose money on your first year? I thought back to the tax return, and I could honestly say, I barely stayed out of the red. I kept her, the business, afloat.
I think back to last week when my student Ryan soloed. I knew he was ready, so I had to just plan. I endorsed his logbook a week prior yet not endorsing the date. I had kept an eye on the weather for that light steady calm dead windsock. I don’t recall my own first solo, but I can remember his quite clearly. We stayed in the pattern for the first 4 touch and goes. He added full throttle and I remember him saying, “This doesn’t get old”. Everything that I had repeated, and reminded, and pointed towards, he was now doing. It’s an incredible feeling. I could hear my reminders, my techniques, now apart of his habits as he talked through his landings. All students are different. He does not typically smile, but he was smiling that day.
Things could always be better. I could have more students. That seal between the prop and crankshaft could slightly drip less. Lance, my A & P isn’t too worried. Overall, I’m in a profession that I truly love. My family is fed and I, AZFlyGal, am not in the red.
