I had a fellow flight instructor fly with me several weeks ago. What an instructor-she’s quite the female pilot! I asked if she would be my check instructor for my current students. She agreed. We were sitting in the cockpit and she asked, Where are we? We’re underneath the tower. N2421Y is right within tower’s view. This is a benefit and a disadvantage at the same time. She pulls out the airport diagram because she’s a perfectionist. Love it. I repeat, We’re underneath the tower. With hesitation and a smile, she communicates, Chandler Ground, underneath the tower, remaining in the pattern for some touch and goes with information whatever.
Everyone communicates differently. I love molding my current students, They, too, say, underneath the tower. Technically every aircraft is underneath the tower. Maybe I should say underneath the base of the tower.
